Žiga Papež is a 30-year-old from Slovenia, a graduate of the Faculty of Sports and a master of management, an elite athlete, and a former professional tennis player. He is the host of the Sladek Lajf (Sweet Life) podcast and the first person with diabetes to successfully complete the extreme North Cape 4000 cycling challenge. His mission is to raise awareness about diabetes—through education and, most importantly, by setting an example that people with diabetes can live a healthy and fulfilling life.

  1. How old were you when you were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes?
    12 years old.
  2. Do you remember the first thing you said or asked when you received your diagnosis?
    If I would still be able to play tennis.
  3. How has diabetes changed your life?
    In the early years, I ignored it, which had a negative impact. In recent years, I have fully embraced and accepted it. Since then, it has given me much more than it has ever taken from me.
  4. How has diabetes changed your perspective on life?
    At first, it negatively affected my outlook on life. But now, I am grateful for the simple things in life.
  5. What worried you the most about living with this disease?
    I knew I was different, labeled, and that I wouldn’t be accepted by my friends.
  6. The funniest thing that has ever happened to you related to diabetes?
    The funniest things are the questions from people who don’t know much about diabetes. “How bad is your diabetes?” is a legendary one.
  7. The most unpleasant experience you’ve had related to diabetes?
    There have been quite a few. For example, forgetting my bag at Vienna airport with all my medical supplies, and my plane was landing in Thailand. I had to visit a hospital there and buy insulin injections.
  8. What annoys you the most about diabetes?
    The feeling of restriction and lack of freedom in so many aspects—food, exercise, sleep… and the constant stress.
  9. Do you miss anything—food, life without devices?
    Of course. I can’t wait for them to find a real cure that will give us our freedom back.
  10. What’s the first thing you would do if you were cured?
    I’d go to southern Italy and stuff myself with pasta, pizza, and tiramisu. 😄
